A pot sized to the plant you've picked, plus optional gift add-ons, before Add to bag
What they do
Pick a height for Susie and two rows open above the button. "Choose your pot. Tap to preview Susie in a pot" starts with "No decorative pot, £0.00" already selected, followed by pots at £12 and £14 and a "View 28 more pots" link. The row changes with the height: pick 70-80cm and it becomes 13 larger pots from £18 to £35. Then "Perfect add ons (optional)": Harth hot chocolate +£9, a Block Design fig candle +£12, Floh lemon hand cream +£12 and a mini prosecco +£6. One Add to bag takes the lot. Patch is still testing this: the site puts each visitor into a "pot-selector-carousel" test, and in one session the pot row showed greyed out with "Select variation to see options" before a height was chosen.
Why it works
A plant needs a pot, and the pot has to fit. Showing pots only once the height is known means every pot in the row fits the plant on screen, so the shopper doesn't have to work out sizes and there's no returned pot that's two centimetres too small. Starting on "no decorative pot" keeps the headline price honest and makes the pot a choice rather than a trick. "Tap to preview" turns the pot into a styling choice, which is what sells it. The add-ons look random for a plant, but Patch sells a lot of gifts (140 products sit under the gift filter), and hot chocolate or prosecco is exactly what turns a plant into a present.
Makes sense when
A product needs a companion that has to match a size or spec: pots, lampshades, phone cases, blades. Show only the companions that fit the option already chosen, start on "none" so the main price stays clear, and keep add-ons to four or so that suit why people buy, which isn't always what the product needs. Testing the layout, as Patch is, is the right instinct, because how much this lifts basket value depends on where it sits.
